Course
This channel starts from the outer canthus of the eye, runs upwards to the corner of the forehead, and curves downwards to the retro-auricular region. Then it runs along the side of the neck in front of the Triple Warmer Channel to the shoulder. Turning backwards it goes behind the Triple Warmer Channel of Hand-Shaoyang, and enters the supraclavicular fossa.
One of its branches originates in the retro-auricular region, passes through the ear, re-emerges in front of the ear and then reaches the posterior aspect of the outer canthus of the eye.
Another branch leaves the outer canthus for Point Daying (ST5) and meets the Triple Warmer Meridian of Hand-Shaoyang again. From there it reaches the infraorbital region, then descends through Point Jiache(ST6) to the neck, from where it passes into the supraclavicular fossa and meets the original channel. The it continues to travel through the chest, the diaphragm, the liver, and then to the gall bladder. It then travels along the inside of the hypochondrium, through Point Qichong(ST30), around the margin of the pubisure, transversely into Point Huantiao
(C-B30).
A third straight branch descends from the supraclavicular fossa to the axilla, from where it continues its descent along the lateral aspect of the chest, through the hypochondrium, to Huantiao(GB30), and meets the above mentioned branch. From Huantiao(GB30), it goes down along the lateral aspect of the thigh, emerges from the lateral side of the knee, and continues its downward travel along the anterior aspect of the fibula, and straight to Juegu, a hollow in the low part of the fibula and 3 individual cun above the external malleolus. Running further downwards, it
emerges in front of the external malleolus. Along the dorsum of the foot, it finds its terminus at the lateral side of the tip of the 4th toe.
A fourth branch leaves the dorsum of the foot, makes its way first between the 1st and 2nd metatarsal bones,then through the distal portion of the big toe, back to its nail and finally out of the hair portion proximal to it, andcommunicates with the Liver Channel of Foot-Jueyin.
Shangguan(GB3)
Location: Anterior to the ear, directly above Xiaguan (ST7), in the depression above the upper border of the zygomatic arch.
Indications: Headache, tinnitus, deafness, otitis media suppurativa, facial hemiparalysis, toothache.
Method: Puncture perpendicularly 0.3-0.5 inch. Deep puncture is not advisable. Moxibustion is applicable.
Regional anatomy
Vasculature: The zygomaticoorbital artery and vein.
Innervation: The zygomatic branch of the facial nerve and the zygomaticofacial nerve.
