Xinyi Flos Magnoliae
The source is from the flower bud of Magnolia biondii Pamp, M. denudata Desr. and M. liliflore Desr., family Magnoliaceae. The medicinal material is collected when its flower bud does not open in the early stage of spring, dried in shade after the stem is picked out and the crude can be used.
Medicinal Properties Pungent in flavor, warm in nature and attributive to the lung and stomach meridians.
Actions Expel wind and cold and clear the nasal passage.
Application
1. For the headache due to sinusitis, it is often used together with Xixin (Herba Asari), Baizhi ( Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), etc., such as Xinyi San (Powder); for that being a bit on the wind-heat side and manifested as episodes of running nose with yellow color and foul smell, it can be used together with Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi) , Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ) , Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ), and Bohe ( Herba Menthae ), etc..
2. For exogenous diseases due to wind and cold manifested as headache and stuffy nose, it is often combined with Fangfeng ( Radix Saposhnikoviae ), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), etc. to expel wind and clear the nasal passage.
Usage and Dosage 3 -9 g is used in decoction for oral use; it is wrapped with gauze and then decocted with other herbs in water since it is covered by hair that can irritate the throat.
Notes Contraindicated in the patient with hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency.
