The theory of Tibetan medicine believes that there are three major elements (Qi, fire, water and soil), seven major substances (food nutrition, blood, flesh, fat, bone, marrow and energy) and three kinds of excrement (urine, feces and sweat) existing in the human body. The three major elements control movement and changes in the seven major substances and the three kinds of excrement. Under normal physiological conditions, the three factors are mutually dependent and restrictive in maintaining a harmonious and baianced state. When one or more factors show excessive strength or weakness for some reason, pathological symptoms will appear as diseases related to the elements described above. The three factors need adjustment through prescribed therapy to restore them to a harmonious state.
One element, the power of the physiological activity of human body, is close in nature to"feng" or "Qi" of traditional Chinese medicine but is more than that in meaning. It gathers in the brain, heart, lung, and bones, controlling aspiration, circulation, the senses and movement.
Another element is gall or fire, which has the nature of "fire" and "heat" of
traditional Chinese medicine of the Han ethnic group. It is distributed in the liver and blood, performing functions of producing heat energy, maintaining body temperature, enhancing stomach functionality, and increasing energy, courage and wisdom.
The third element is saliva or water and soil, which plays an important role in transferring digested food and regulating liquid. It exists in the gall, stomach and bladder. It has the nature of "water" and "soil" since it may regulate digestion and metabolize water and influence man's weight and temper.
As to the cause of diseases, Tibetan medicine attributes it to the three unbalanced and inharmonious aforementioned major elements that sap vitality and threaten health. Therefore, the purpose of therapy is to regulate exceedingly strong or weak elements to enable them to return to a harmonious state.
Tibetan medicine believes that food nutrition is the most important among the seven major substances and it is the source of other substances. Blood can sustain life; flesh can work as an enclosure to protect the body; bones form the body's support; marrow can produce sperm; sperm can multiply descendants; fat can improve skin color. The three kinds of excrement are products of normal bodily physiological activity.
