Tuinai Auxiliary Therapy
In the course of treatment and health care with Chinese Tuina, according to different diseases and symptoms, some simple and effective means, such as cupping, moxibustion, finger-pressing point, massage of auricular points, massage with ointments (Gaomo) and hot compress with Chinese herbs are used as auxiliary methods.
These auxiliary methods may help achieve more satisfactory therapeutic results. The following is a brief introduction of the most commonly used massage with ointments (Gaomo)and hot compress. Massage Therapy with Ointment-Gaom Gaomo or massage with ointments is actually a general term of techniques in which some ointments applied to the treated areas of the body surface before performing some manipulations, especially pushing, to-and-fro rubbing, palm-twisting, kneading and circular rubbing, in the course of massage. The ointments are prepared in the forms of cream, oil solution, or tincture from some Chinese herbal medicines and other substances with curative and preventive effects. Gaomo functions in two aspects.Firstly, these preparations act as lubricators to protect the skin from injury in mina therapy. Secondly, the medical components of preparations will permeate into the body during manipulation, and become an active factor to prevent and treat diseases. Gaomo prescriptions started to be recorded in ancient times with various kinds and types. At present, however, only those easily-prepared, effective medicines and substances are usually adopted as components of ordinary Gaomo prescriptions in clinic, which are also called Tuina media, and applied selectively in treatment according to the specific symptoms or diseases.
