Minor Decoction of Bupleurum For Treating shaoyang disease by mediation

Radix Bupteuri

Ingredients:
No. 1 Chaihu (Radix Bupteuri) 24 g;
No. 2 Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 9 g;
No. 3 Renshen (Radix Gingseng) 9 g;
No. 4 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 6 g;
No. 5 Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 9 g;
No. 6 Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) 9 g;
No. 7 Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) 4 pcs.

Administration: Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.

Clinical Application: This recipe is used to treat febrile diseases in shaoyang meridian, marked by alterriate attacks of chills and fever, fullness in the chest, hypo chondriac discomfort, dysphoria, retching, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, thin and whitish fur and taut pulse.

It is applicable to common cold, influenza, chronic hepatitis, acute or chronic cholecystitis, pleuritis, pyelonephritis, postpartum infection, gastric ulcer and other diseases, which manifest the above symptoms and pertain to febrile disease in shaoyang meridian.

In case of dysphoria without vomiting, which is indicative of heat accumulating in the chest, replace ingredients No. 3 and No. 5 with Gualou (Fructus Trichosanthis) to clear away heat and regulate qi for relieving chest fullness.

In case of body fluid impaired by heat with manifestation of thirst, replace No. 5 with Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis) to produce body fluid for quenching thirst. If the spleen is affected by the stagnated liver-qi with abdominal pain, replace No. 2 with Baishaoyao (Radiic Paeoniae Alba) to nourish the liver for relieving spasm and pain.

Elucidation: The syndrome is due to pathogenic factors invading shaoyang meridian and fighting against healthy qi in between the exterior and interior. Ingredient No. 1, as monarch drug, dispels the pathogenic factors located in the half exterior and restores the functional activity of shaoyang meridian. Ingredient No. 2 acts as minister drug to purge away heat located in the half interior.

They are primary drugs for treating shaoyang disease, one for dispelling pathogenic factor, and the other clearing away the accumulated heat. Ingredients No. 5 and No. 6 can regulate the stomach and relieve vomiting, while ingredients No. 3, No. 4 and No. 7 supplement qi and strengthen body resistance to prevent the pathogenic factors from getting into the interior.

These five ingredients play the role of adjuvant drug. Ingredient No. 4 coordinates the actions of various drugs in the recipe and also serves as guiding drug.

Cautions: This recipe should be used with great caution for patients with shaoyang disease but manifesting deficiency of yin and blood because Ingredient No. 1 possesses lifting and dispersing action and ingredients No. 2 and No. 5 are of dry nature.
