Tibetan Herbal Select Should Be Drying
In Bshad rgyud, it is said that, "All herbs must be dried and selected, and beaten when still green and bound into bundles." For cool drugs, the herbs must be dried by airing, while for heat drugs, the drying should occur in front of a fire or under sunshine. Care must be taken to prevent disease them from being blown by the wind, scorched by fire, over-dried by sunlight; over-fumigated by fumes or smoke, or contaminated by other smells or tastes. In this way, the herbs can thus be kept highly effective. Here, "other smells or tastes" refers to the mixing of herbs together when drying, which will impair the properties of the individual herbs. All herbs should be carefully separated for drying to keep their functions intact.
Regarding "beat while green," it means that the herbs, after the collection and development of a slightly shriveled-up appearance, should be beaten gently with a rod so as to preserve their taste and smell. Or, it can be done by scrubbing with clean hands so that the green juice oozes out a little. The herbs taste will be lost totally if it is not beaten green or scrubbed like dry grass without taste. Herbs should be kept clean at any time, prevented from being polluted by saliva or dirty hands. It is not allowed to test the herb by biting with the teeth or licking. Differentiating Old and New
