  • Chen-style Taiji Quan
Chen-style Taiji Quan is divided into the old frame and the new frame. The old frame was created by Chen Wang-ting in the early years of the Qing Dynasty ( 1644-1911 ). It originally included five routines, (also called the thirteen forms), a set of Chang Quan (Long-style Boxing) consisting of 108 forms and a set of Pao Chui (Cannon Boxing). Based on the experience accumulated during the 300 years.

Since Chen Wangting, Chen's originals have been improved and refined into the first two sets of the presentday Chen-style Taiji Quan. These sets are carefully arranged with different speeds, intensities, body techniques, amounts of physical power and degrees of difficulty, but both conform to the principles of advancing step-by-step and combining hardness with softness.

The first set consists of 83 forms. Its main features are: (1) Evident display of silk-spinning power. Make sure that in all movements, power is generated from the back and waist and carries through to the tips of the four limbs. The movements are executed in circular and spiral forms, including twining, winding, spinning and turning, so that "when one movement is executed, all parts of the body, internal and external, are moving"; (2) Combine hardness and softness, with softness dwelling in hardness. In other words, once a movement is executed, you must generate an internal strength which is apparently hard, but not hard, and apparently soft but not soft, and which is heavy and flexible; (3) The movements must be integrated with breathing and the direction of strength to make sure that the energy stream flows to the pubic region and circulates in it. Sounds can also be produced while exhaling to increase strength; (4) Equal stress on quickness and slowness. In other words, at the connections, the movements must be quick and, in general, the movements should be slow; (5) There are three frames for Taiji Quan, high, middle and low. Frail and unhealthy people should practise the high frame, while the young and strong should learn the low frame.

The second set was originally called Pao Chui, or cannon boxing, and consists of 71 forms. Its main features are: (1) There are more movements executed with power generated through foot stamping; (2) The movements are quicker and harder, and have greater explosive force than the first set; (3) There are more jumps, dodges and transfers. The second set is good for young people, but it is less popular than the first set.
