    it is often used in combination with Shayuanzi ( Semen Astragali Complanati), Longgu ( Os Draconis ), Muli ( Concha Osteae ), and Lianxu ( Stamen Nelumbinis), etc., such as Jinsuo Gujing Wan (Pill).

    For poor appetite and chronic diarrhea due to deficiency of the spleen, it is usually used together with Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae ) , Fuling (Poria), Shanyao ( Rhizma Dioscoreae ), etc., such as Shen Ling Baizhu San (Powder).

    For asthenia-dysphoria, palpitation and insomnia, it can be used in combination with Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae ), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis), and Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae), etc..

    In addition, it can also be used to treat metrorrhagia and metrostaxis and excessive leukorrhea, etc..

    Usage and Dosage  6 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use.

    Notes  Lianxu ( Stamen Nelumbinis) is also a medicinal part. It is sweet and astringent in flavor, mild in nature and it has the actions of strengthening the kidney to stop seminal emission. It is indicated for seminal emission, spermatorrhea, leukorrhea, and frequent micturition, etc..

    Jinyingzi  Fructus Rosae Laevigatae

    The source is from the ripe fruit of Rosa laevigata Michx, family Rosaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in Guangdong, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou provinces and collected in September, October and November when the fruit is ripe. After the kernel is removed from the fruit, it is dried in the sun. The crude one is used.

    Medicinal Properties  Sour and astringent in flavor, mild in nature, and attributive to the kidney, bladder and large intestine meridians.

    Actions  Relieve nocturnal emission and reduce the frequency of urination, astringe the intestine to relieve diarrhea.

    Application

    For kidney-deficiency manifested as nocturnal emission, sperma torrhoea, enuresis, frequent micturition and excessive leukorrhea, it can be decocted singly into soft extract for oral use, that is, Jinyingzi Gao (Soft extract) or used together with Qianshi (Semen Euryales), such as Shuilu Erxian Dan (Bolus).

    For chronic diarrhea and lingering dysentery, it can be decocted alone or used together with such Chinese medicinal herbs for benefiting qi and tonifying the spleen as Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractyloclis Macrocephalae ), and Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae).

    In addition, it can also be applied for prolapse of the rectum, uterine prolapse, and metrorrhagia and metrostaxis because of its astringing property.

    Usage and Dosage  6 -12 g is used in decoction for oral use. It can also be made into pills or soft extract for oral use.

    Notes  It is not suitable for those with sthenic fire and/or sthenic pathogenic factors.

    Haipiaoxiao  Os Sepiellae seu Sepiae

    The source is from the internal shell of the mollusk sepiella maindroni de Rochebrune., or Sepia esculenta Hoyle, family Sopidae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in such coastal provinces as Liaoning, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang and collected from April to August. The internal shell is taken out, cleaned, dried in the open air until the smell of seafood disappears. The crude is used.

    Medicinal Properties  Salty and astringent in flavor, slightly warm in nature, and attributive to the liver and kidney meridians.

    Actions  Astringe to stop bleeding, stop emission and leukorrhea, control acid regurgitation to arrest pain, eliminate dampness and promote sore healing.

    Application

    It is used for metrorrhagia and metrostaxis and bleeding from the lung or stomach, and that due to trauma. In treating metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, it is often used in combination with Qiancaogen ( Radix Rubiae ), Zonglüitan (Petioulus Trachycarpi Carbonisatus), and Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), etc., such as Guchong Tang (Decoction). In treating bleeding from the lung or stomach, the powder is used together with same amount of the powder of Baiji (Rhizoma Btetillae), that is, Wu Ji San (Powder). In treating traumatic bleeding, the powder can be applied to the local area.

    It is used for emission and leukorrhea. In treating emission, it is used together with such Chinese medicinal herbs for benefiting the kidney to stop nocturnal emission as Shanzhuyu ( Fructus Corni ), Tusizi ( Semen Cuscutae ) , and Shayuanzi ( Semen Astragali Complanati). In treating abnormal leukorrhea with bloody discharge, it can be used in combination with Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) and Xueyutan (Crinis Carbonisatus), such as Baizhi San (Powder).

    For stomachache with acid regurgitation, it can be used together with Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae), such as Wu Bei San (Powder).

    It is used for skin pyogenic infection, eczema, ulcer with profuse pus. In treating skin pyogenic infection and eczema, it is used together with Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) and Oingdai ( Indigo Naturalis), which can be ground into powder and applied to the local area. In treating ulcer with profuse pus, it can be ground into powder and applied to the local area, or used together with Duanshigao (Gypsum Fibrosum Usta) and Duanlonggu ( Os Draconis Usta ), Baizhi ( Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), and Bingpian (Borneolum), etc. which are ground into fine powder for applying to the wound areas.

    Usage and Dosage 6-12 g is used in decoction for oral use and 1.5 -3 g in powder. Just right amount is used for external use.

    Notes  It is not suitable for those with heat of yin-deficiency type.
