White Crane Taji and Wrist Therapy
# Under medical supervision, the White Crane Taji can offer exercise of the wrist as wrist therapy.
According to traditional Chinese medicine and the 5 element school, the liver and gall bladder meridians control and nourish the tendons and sinews of
the body. For a severe case of wrist pain, recommend seeing a doctor of TCM medicine. The White Crane Taji of the 5 element school starts in the resting Wuji position. About six sets of three routines might be sufficient to exercise the wrist.
Routine 1
The Taji player starts in the resting Wuji position. Feet are shoulder width apart with
done in a standing position.
knees slightly flexed. Each hand is placed roughly in front of the top hip bone in the
scapular plane. The hands are facing each other as if holding a large green ball. The Taji
player then begins a sequence of three deep breaths. The inhale should be about six seconds
long with a exhale of corresponding length. With each exhale, the player murmurs the six Taoist sounds, which are called "liuzijue" in pinyin and sounds like "chute shoe gee her she stit" in english.
Routine 2
Preceding from the resting Wuji position, the player makes crane beak fists pointing into each
side of the hip bone. The crane beak fists are pointing roughly at the area of acupoints
GB26, GB29, GB30, and LI13 near the top of the hip bone. With an inhale breathe of six seconds,
the player raises both hands in the scapular plane and slightly rises in the knees. This
gesture looks somewhat like pulling taffy or string out of the hipbone. As both hands rise to shoulder
level, the player is effectively transforming into a taji strike with double crane fists at
the shoulder level. Each crane fist is pointed down and out of the way, as the taji
striking surface is the upper end of the forearm. Remember, this taji strike is
hypothetical, as the motion should last about six seconds and be done very slowly in
complete relaxation to continue chi flow. After the hands have risen up past shoulder
level, then wave up or flick the hands with fingers spread apart. Then with a exhale, drop
the hands with fingers apart back to the hip position and bend knees to the original
position. This position of White Crane and double crane fists should be for three times. Using energy
stored in the resting Wuji position, this exercise should release stagnant chi stacked in
the LI/GB meridians and help the chi circulation through the wrists.
Routine 3
Starting from the resting position, the player raises both hands spread out as modified
White Crane spreads wings for a six second inhale. With the exhale, the player returns to
the rest position. With waving and flicking of hands spread apart, the player is trying to
completely relax the wrists and hands. The alternate up and down flapping is intended to
relax the hands and shake blood into the extremities. This modified White Crane spreads
wings should be for three times. After exercise you will need extra fluids, so enjoy a cup
of mixed green tea and green peppermint tea.
