General Description
AIDS is a special disease of acquired immune deficiency. It is caused by the infection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), therefore it is called Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. The major clinical manifestations are fever, night sweating, emaciation, lassitude,cough, diarrhea, rash, generalized lymphadenectasis, etc. The disease is a new type of infectious disease which has caught the greatest attention in the world today. As its mortality rate is extremely high and the two-year survival rate is less than 30%, it is known as the "super cancer" and the "new pestilence in the 20th century".The disease is transmitted by way of sexual intercourse,injection, mother-to-infant, etc. Its incubation period is several months to half a year, and even as long as seven years. When the virus attacks the immune system of the human body, it completely destroys the immune function and makes the human body lose its resistance against various kinds of viruses, bacteria, protozoa and fungi, therefore aids patients easily die of various kinds of infections.
