This disease has two major types : icteric and non-icteric. Icterohepatitis belongs to the category of "huangdan" (jaundice) in traditional Chinese medicine, marked by icteric sclera and skin. and yellow-coloured urine; while nonicteric hepatitis the category of "xie tong" (hypochrondriac pain), "yu zheng" (disturbance of the liver-qi) marked by nausea, hypochrondriac pain, distension and fullness in the abdomen and lassitude. Medicated dietetic treatment is an auxiliary aid of great importance to the treatment of the disease, which plays a role not ignorable in relieving the patient's symptoms, and recuperating the health of the organims.

Common Types of Syndromes
One type is bile oozing from the gallbladder due to dampheat accumulating in the liver and gallbladder, marked by icterie sclera and skin, and yellow-coloured urine, accompanied with fever, irritability, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, yellow ish and greasy fur on the tongue, and taut and rapid pulse.
 
Another type is incoordination between the spleen and the stomach caused by accumulation of excessive damp-heat in the interior, marked by nausea, hypochondriac pain, distension and fullness in the abdomen, lassitude, accompanied with loss of appetite, irritability, white and greasy or yellowish and  greasy fur on the tongue, and slippery and rapid pulse.
 
The third one is stagnancy of qi and blood resulting from incoordinaiton between the liver and the spleen, marked by wandering or stationary distending pain or piercing pain in hypochondrium, dim complexion, loss of appetite, distension
in the abdomen, belching or hepatosplenomegaly, dim and pale tongue or with ecchymoses, thin fur on the tongue, and taut and uneven pulse.
 
Dietetic Chinese Drugs
Day lily (Radix Hemerocallis) Decoct 30 g of the fresh roots of day lily in water for oral administration.
 
Cucumber skin (Exocarpium Cucumeris Sativus) Decoct cucumber skin in water for drinking, three times a day.
 
Cucumber root (Radix Cucumeris Sativus)   Pound some cucumber roots into a mash to get the juice. Take a cup of it warm every morning.
 
Corn (Semen Maydis) Make gruel with 50g of corn pieces; put in a bit of salt when the gruel is well done.
 
Shaddock ped (Pericarpium Cirri Grandis) Have the peel of 2 shaddocks burnt until it becomes charred and ground into fine powder. Take 5 to 10g at a time, three times a day, with rice (or millet) soup after meals.
 
River snail (Cipangopaludina Chinensis) Raise 10 to 20 river snails in clear water to rinse the mud out of them; take out the flesh and add 200 ml of millet wine; have it mixed and stewed in water until it is done. Drink the soup once a day.
 
Waxgourd (Fructus Benincasae) Have 500g of waxgourd boiled in water to get 1500ml of soup. Take it in three portions.
 
The above dietetic therapeutic drugs are applicable to icteric hepatitis of the type of bile oozing from the gallbladder due to damp-heat accumulating in the liver and gallbladder.
 
Wild jujube (Fructus Ziziphi Spinosae) Decoct 30g of wild jujubes in just the right amount of water for an hour; remove the dregs, eat the jujubes and drink the decoction. Take a dose a day. This recipe has an effect of lowering transaminase to normal, applicable to both the type of incoordination between the spleen and the stomach caused by damp-heat accumulating in the interior, and the type of stagnancy of qi and blood resulting from incoordination between the liver and the spleen.
 
Purple gromwell root (Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi) Have 30g of purple gromwell roots decocted two times in just the right amount of water, letting it boil for thirty minutes each time and then filtering out the decoction; put. all the
filtered decoction together. Take it twice a day.
 
Plum (Prunum)   Eat fresh plums after meals, two or three at a time.
The above two drugs are suitable for those who suffer flora the type of stagnancy of qi and blood resulting from into-ordination between the liver and the spleen.
 
Composite Recipes of Medicated Diet
Recipe of Day Lily and Loach (Finzhen Niqiu)
     INGREDIENTS
     day lily, Flos ttemerocalis Immaturus                  30g
     loach, M is gurnus AnguiUicaudatus                     100g
     PROCESS Make soup with the day lily and loach flesh and season it for eating.
Drink of Willow Leaf and "Crater Chestnut (Liuye Biqi Cha)
     INGREDIENTS
     willow leaf, Folium Salicis                           6g
     water chestnut, Buibus Hdeocharis Tuberosae         500g
     PROCESS Make decoction with 6 g of willow leaves and 500 g of water chestnuts.
     DIRECTIONS Drink the decoction and eat the water chestnuts; take a dose a day, and several doses successively.
Recipe of Canton Love-pea Vine and Lean Pork (Figueao Shouzhurou Tang)
     INGREDIENTS
     Canton love-pea vine, Herba Abri                   60g
     lean pork                                         100g
PROCESS Boil 100g of Canton love-pea vine and 100 g of lean pork in just the right amount of water for two to three hours, remove the dregs and have it seasoned.
DIRECTIONS Take a dose once a day, for several days.
 
Loach and Bean-curd (Niqiu Cuan Doufu)
     INGREDIENTS
     bean-curd                                             100g
     living loach, Misgurnus Anguillicaudatus              250g
     corn stigma, Stigma Maydis (wrapped up in cloth)       30g
 
PROCESS Have the loach raised in a basin for 1 or 2 days; take it out and put it in an earthenware pot together with the corn stigma and bean-curd; add just the right amount of water to have them decocted. When they are thoroughly done, have them seasoned for eating.
     DIRECTIONS   Take it once a day, for several days.
 
Decoction of Watermelon Peel and Red Bean (Xiguapi Chixiaodou Tang)
     INGREDIENTS
     watermelon peel, Exocarpium Citrulli                 50g
     red bean, Semen Phaseoli                             50g
     cogongrass root, Rhizoma Imperatae                   50g
     PROCESS Make decoction with watermelon peel, red beans and cogongrass root.
     DIRECTIONS Take the decoction once a day, for 5 to 7 days successively.
 
Gruelwith Oriental Wormwood (rinchen Zhou)
     INGREDIENTS
     oriental wormwood, Herba Artemisiae Capillaris      30 to 45 g
     polished round-grained rice, Semen Oryzae Sativae           100 g
     white sugar                                                  a bit
PROCESS Have some oriental wormwood washed clean and use 30 to 45g at a time; add 200 ml of water and decoct it until 100 ml of water is left. Remove the dregs to get the extract; put in lOOg of polished round-grained rice, add 600 ml of water and cook until the rice is well-done and the extract becomes thick. Add a bit of white sugar and go on cooking for a while until it has boiled for a little while.
